In October 1999 my third daughter was born via caesarean section. The operation was lengthy and complex. In the process some medication flowed into my lungs, causing my breathing to stop. I nearly died.

Start of My Ordeal

This experience led to further physical ailments. My blood pressure would spike as high as 180 mmHg. (Editor’s note: Healthy blood pressure in adults is a reading of about 120 systolic and 80 diastolic.) I always felt dizzy and my body was weak. My spine felt very tight and my limbs were always sore and numb.

I needed support whenever I had to get up or squat down. I tended to faint if blood was drawn during a medical checkup. My gait was slow and unsteady. There wasn’t much the doctor could do. The only advice he had for me was to be cautious when on my feet, as a fall could lead to a stroke or even death.

My Worsening Health

My condition took a turn for the worse. In January 2004 I was diagnosed with diabetes. My blood-sugar level was at 16 mmol/L. (Editor’s note: Fasting blood sugar normal range is between 3.9 mmol/L and 6.1 mmol/L.) Initially, I had to take a daily dosage of six tablets to control the level. But my health continued to crumble and eventually, even if I took the prescribed medication, the level would go up to 18 mmol/L. I had to increase my daily medication to 18 tablets, along with an insulin injection.

I started to experience blurred vision in 2015. It seemed that my sight was blocked by patches of dark circles. The doctor said that it was due to diabetes and I could go blind anytime. During this period, I could not walk more than 10 steps at a time. I couldn’t stand up, even with support. X-rays confirmed that the cartilage in my knees had worn out. I did not have the financial means for knee-replacement surgery. I used a wheelchair and struggled to carry on. My dire condition prompted me to search for deeper meaning, and to truly appreciate the preciousness of every moment of life.

Every Step Pays Off

In January 2016, my neighbor brought me to Klang Dragon Spring Bodhi Meditation Center. On my first visit, I leaned against a wall and staggered from the elevator to the welcoming embrace of the meditation center.

I signed up for the Energy Bagua course. A dharma sister drove me to the venue for practice every morning. Initially, my hands and legs trembled uncontrollably. I needed to sit down for a 10-minute rest after each round. However, my determination to endure the challenges soon began to pay off.

After practicing for a month, I could walk faster than before as my legs had gained strength. After two months, I was able to walk an hour of Energy Bagua steadily with a rest of five minutes in between each round.

Three months later, there were significant improvements. My bodily pains and numbness faded. I was able to take a bus and walk independently from the bus stop to the meditation center, which required taking about 370 steps. My confidence soared.

No longer do I feel dizzy when bending to do closing exercises after finishing an Energy Bagua session. My spine feels relaxed. My blood pressure has decreased to 120 mmHg / 80mmHg, which is within the normal range. My high blood-sugar level normalized after six months of practice, and thus I was able to stop receiving insulin injections. My vision is back to normal; clear sight is a gift beyond words.

As I reflect on my life over the past many years, I realize how much I struggled just to live each day. I had never dreamed that there would be a day when I would be given a new lease on life. I am deeply and sincerely grateful to Grandmaster JinBodhi and Bodhi Meditation.
